Developing a people’s network for medical services and the control and prevention of HIV/AIDS was one of the major topics discussed at the sixth ASEAN People’s Forum (APF-6) in Hanoi on September 25.

The delegates underlined the need to improve the quality of healthcare and medical services and make some changes in national policies to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

They acknowledged proposals to draw up an action plan for ASEAN people’s organisations of ASEAN with a view to enhancing research and communication activities and improving healthcare services for controlling and preventing HIV/AIDS.

They proposed measures to support the output handicraft products and provide vocational training for HIV infected people.

The APF-6 forum also discussed policies on the rights of migrant workers and defined challenges to ensure their rights. The ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers (ACMW) was implemented in 2007 to devise specific measures to encourage people’s organisations to protect the interests of migrant workers and provide financial assistance.
