Prime Minister Phan Van Khai has urged the implementation of urgent measures to help people in Typhoon Chanchu-hit provinces overcome the aftermath and resume production and normal lives.

In a decision signed on May 31, the Prime Minister asked the People's Committees of Da Nang city and Quang Nam, Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh provinces to instruct administrations and mass organisations at grassroots levels to continue assisting and providing aid for affected families.

He also asked them to set up inter-sector inspection delegations to generate specific statistics on losses of each household and to propose tax reductions, loan provision and other forms of assistance to help affected households as soon as possible.

The government leader said these localities should effectively utilise relief to assist affected households, especially families of people who were killed; build houses for poor families; and help pupils in typhoon-struck areas resume their studies.

The central provinces and Da Nang city should to draw experiences in managing offshore fishing activities, improve the dissemination of information on storms for fishermen, and develop a proper mechanism for coordination with border guards and maritime police to ensure safety for fishermen during storms, the decision said.

The Government will allocate US$1.3 million to help these localities overcome the aftermath, the Prime Minister added.
