Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has ordered the Ministry of Public Security and concerned agencies to hasten investigations into the graft scandal at Project Management Unit 18 (PMU 18) and finalise it by August.

At a working session with the ministry and concerned agencies in Hanoi on July 5, the newly-elected PM urged investigators to quickly identify the source of money that was used by former PMU 18 Director General Bui Tien Dung for betting.

He also requested investigators to check all invoices, receipts and balance sheets relating to five bidding packages for the construction of National Highway 18 that had been monitored by PMU 18.

The PM emphasised that people who are found to have assisted criminals and who cause difficulties for the investigators will be punished strictly regardless of their positions.

At the working session, the Ministry of Public Security confirmed that Bui Tien Dung had wagered US$1.5 million on scores of football games. It said investigators have been concentrating on exposing legal violations within PMU 18 when it was headed by Dung and his predecessor Nguyen Viet Tien.
