World football star to visit Vietnam

Former Italian international football star Fabio Cannavaro is scheduled to arrive in Ho Chi Minh City this weekend at the invitation of Eximbank.

This is the first time Vietnam welcomes the world’s golden ball player. During his time in the Southeast Asian country, Cannavaro will have a talk with local media on January 6.

The former Italian captain will have an exchange with HCM City’s U15 footballers at Thong Nhat Stadium on January 7 and observe a Super League match between Saigon and Hoang Anh Gia Lai at the stadium later the same day.

On January 8, Cannavaro will meet his fans at the HCM City Youth Culture House.

Born in 1973, Cannavaro led Italy to victory in the 2006 World Cup and is considered one of the greatest defenders of all time.

During his career, Cannavaro played in four World Cups, and currently holds an Italian record of 136 international appearances, in which he scored two goals. He has played for many famous football clubs, such as Parma, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid.

He was awarded the title “2006 European Golden Ball” and named “the world’s most outstanding footballer” five years ago. He was also the only defender ever to win FIFA’s most outstanding football player.

Retiring from professional football in July 2011, Cannavaro is now leading the Al Ahli club of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
