VOVNews online (http://www.vov.org.vn), in co-ordination with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), on June 25 held an online exchange entitled “HIV/AIDS prevention and control in the workplace” with the participation of doctors from the Infection Department of Dong Da Hospital in Hanoi.

VOVNews received hundreds of questions and telephone calls from readers, who are very concerned over the danger of HIV/AIDS infection.

Judging from the rapid spread of the AIDS pandemic, HIV not only poses a huge threat to high-risk groups such as sex workers and drug users but also attacks the community. HIV/AIDS patients may transmit the fatal disease to their husband or wife. This will increase the number of people living with HIV/AIDS, particularly in the workplace.

However, the HIV can only be transmitted through three ways - unprotected sexual intercourse; direct blood contact through injection, drug needle, blood transfusion, accident in health care settings or certain blood products; and mother to baby (before or during birth, or through breast milk). Hence, the risk of HIV infection in the workplace will not exist if people know how to prevent it.

Doctor Pham Ba Hien from the Infection Department, Dong Da Hospital, emphasized the importance of disseminating information about HIV/AIDS infection in the workplace, which he said will make people understand about the causes of HIV/AIDS infection and how to prevent it.

Doctor Hien said lack of knowledge about HIV/AIDS may lead to discrimination against HIV/AIDS carriers and make people fearful of going to hospital for examination. Concealing HIV/AIDS infection has caused the spread of the disease in the community.

Therefore, proper understanding about HIV/AIDS will prevent discrimination against HIV/AIDS carriers, and make them feel confident about life so that they can contribute to reducing HIV infection in the community.
