Local artist’s project to connect South East Asian dancers

Young local artist Do Hai Anh will launch a “Dance to exchange” project aimed at connecting dancers in Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.

In 2014, Do Hai Anh whose stage name is Yumi had a chance to meet a lot of artists in the region through a project for young choreographers called Sea Choreolab in Malaysia. The 24-year-old wants to hold an exchange program between local and regional dancers via workshops and photo exhibitions to promote cultural understanding and improve dancing knowledge among artists.

The first event is a contemporary dance class to be lectured by Do Hai Anh and Aditep Jane from Thailand. There is also a photo exhibition featuring Anh’s dancing-themed artworks which were released in the 5th edition of the Saigon Artbook, a series of non-profit art books, in Ho Chi Minh City in June.

Anh told the Daily that she was interested in the project as it would be an amazing experience for local dancers to learn and exchange with young talented choreographers from regional countries. “It’s not only a dance exchange program but a chance for me and other dancers to learn about cultural traits of each country and enhance relations among countries,” she added.

The artists also expect to hold exhibitions of photo collections taken in popular tourist destinations of regional countries.

Anh started dancing at the age of 5 at Baby Mickey dance group in Ho Chi Minh City. Then, she studied at the HCMC Dance School for seven years. In September 2014, she became one of the well-known Arabesque Dance artists to tour six US states.

She has also opened Unicorn Studio, a dancing and photography studio where she creates her works of art and develop her upcoming charity project “Art for everyone” to teach dancing for children and adults for free.

Aditep Buanoi, also known as Jane, is a professional choreographer in Thailand. He firstly started as a ballet and contemporary dancer after graduating from Silpakom University. He reaped numerous awards in Thailand and Japan before winning a dancing scholarship in Singapore.
