Buddhists in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre have condemned Most Venerable Thich Quang Do for inciting petitioners to cause social disorder in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City recently.

“Acts by Most Venerable Thich Quang Do, together with Thich Khong Tanh, Thich Nhut Thuong and Thich Dong Ngoc, who had distributed money to petitioners and incited them to cause social disorder against the administration were completely wrong,” said Most Venerable Thich Nhut Tan, head of the provincial Buddhist Sangha’s Executive Council at a recent special meeting of the council.

“His wrong doings have brought Buddhism into disrepute and betrayed the people’s trust and national interests,” said the Most Venerable.

He affirmed that the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha is the only organisation that legally represents all Buddhist monks, nuns and followers in Vietnam.

“The Executive Council of the provincial Buddhist Sangha does not recognise any organisations and any acts that sow division and do harm to the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha’s principle “Buddha Dharma, Nation and Socialism,” said Most Venerable Thich Nhut Tan. “Those who follow this lofty principle will be supported and safeguarded by the State. In contrast, those who act against the national interests will be duly punished according to the law.”

The Executive Council called on all Buddhist monks, nuns, and followers in the province not to be incited by subversive elements to break the law and go against the principle of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha. They would better join with the nation in making contributions to national development, the council said.
