A festival introducing Vietnam’s culture and history began in the capital of the Republic of Korea (RoK), Seoul, on September 1.

The event will take place in the Guro, Dobong, Eunpyung and Seongdong districts of Seoul every Saturday in September. It is part of a series of activities marking Vietnam-RoK Friendship Year 2012 and the 20th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.

At the opening ceremony, President of the Korea-Vietnam Friendship Association (KOVIFA) Choi Young-joo emphasized that the RoK and Vietnam share many historical and cultural similarities and have made joint efforts to develop prosperous nations and happy people in a peaceful, friendly and cooperative environment.

Among the nearly 1.4 million foreigners living and working in the RoK, there are around 123,000 Vietnamese people, including 50,000 brides, 68,000 guest workers and 5,000 students.

Choi said he hopes that the festival will help Korean people gain a better understanding of Vietnamese culture, history and cuisine.

Vietnamese ambassador to the RoK, Tran Trong Toan, said the embassy applauds KOVIFA organising the event to strengthen bilateral ties in all fields, including politics, economics, culture, society, education, training, science, technology, defence and security.

He thanked the Korean Government and people, as well as KOVIFA, for creating the best possible conditions for Vietnamese-Korean families to have better lives. He said he believes that the strategic partnership between Vietnam and the RoK will continue to grow and flourish for mutual benefits and for peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
