Vietnam has won a contract to export 300,000 tonnes of rice to the Philippines.

Vietnam’s six suppliers led by the State-owned Vietnam Southern Food Corp (Vinafood) took part in the tender.

Apart from the Vietnamese exporters, six other suppliers from Thailand, India, Pakistan, China, US and Australia also bid on the tender.

In the tender, the Philippines National Food Authority aimed to purchase 550,000 tonnes of 25 percent broken rice between February and April this year.

Vietnam has so far exported 700,000 tonnes of rice to its primary importers, namely the Philippines and countries in the Middle East and South America, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Vietnamese rice has been exported to more than 70 countries and territories around the world including demanding markets such as the EU, the US and Japan.

In 2007, Vietnam ranked second among the world’s rice exporters, (after Thailand), with an export volume of 4.3 million tones and grossing more than US$1.4 billion in export turnover, said the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
