Thailand started its first by-elections of last month's general election in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima on January 13 to fill the posts of three winners disqualified by the Election Commission (EC) earlier.

The three disqualified candidates from the People Power Party (PPP) got yellow cards due to involvement in electoral fraud.

Viravudh Songsai, chief of the EC's Nakhon Ratchasima Branch, said that about 70 percent of eligible voters went to the polls, slightly lower than the percentage achieved in the December 23 general election.

Unofficial results of the by-elections are expected to be announced at about 13:30 GMT.

The second by-elections are expected for January 20. After two rounds of by-elections, Thailand’s new parliament will convene its first session on January 22.
