Grand Duke of Luxembourg Henri began an official visit to Vietnam on November 6 at the invitation of State President Truong Tan Sang.

The Grand Duke is being accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister cum Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn and senior officials of ministries, agencies and economic groups in the country.

Vietnam and Luxembourg established diplomatic relations on Novermber 15, 1973. Luxembourg provided Vietnam with assistance during the war against the US imperialists for national independence and also backed Vietnam’s nomination as a non-permanent member of the United Nation Security Council in the 2008-2009 term. It has subsequently asked Vietnam to support its nomination to the post for the 2013-2014 term.

Luxembourg now has 20 projects operating in Vietnam with a total capitalization of US$1.1 billion. Most projects are in the construction, food processing, information, communications and high-tech industries.

Two-way trade reached US$25 million in September 2011, with Vietnam exporting mainly wood and handicraft products while importing steel and leather from Luxembourg.

Both countries have signed numerous agreements in different fields including rural development, health care, tourism, finance, and banking.

The Grand Duke’s visit demonstrates Luxembourg’s policy to respect its multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam, especially in economics, trade, investment, and finance. It is expected that the cooperation between the two countries in international forums with also be strengthened.

During the official visit, both sides will discuss international and regional issues of mutual concern such as the global economic crisis, climate change, and epidemics.
