The 2011 National Traffic Safety Month was launched in Hanoi on August 31 by the Ministry of Transport, the National Traffic Safety Committee, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour, and the Vietnam General Department of Roads.

This year’s Traffic Safety Month is entitled ‘Preventing alcohol-abuse among vehicle drivers’ and is aimed at reducing alcohol-related traffic accidents in terms of cases, fatalities and the number of those injured.

Addressing the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Transport Le Manh Hung called on national trade unions and staff of the transport industry to actively engage in the campaign this September.

He also urged them to set good examples in complying with traffic laws and disseminating information on traffic safety.

Hung remarked that traffic violations are generally increasing, and that there is a large number of road users driving drunk, ‘swinging a hammock’, or illegally passing red lights.

The transport official attributed this to poor awareness among road users.
