The ninth session of the 12th National Assembly (NA) opened in Hanoi on March 21 to listen to reports on the implementation of socio-economic plans and the state budget for 2010 as well as the first months of 2011.

The session, the final of the 12th NA, is expected to endorse three draft laws concerning Independent Audit, the Capital City, and Preventing and Fighting Human Trafficking, and some amendments to the Civil Procedural Law.

In addition, NA deputies will review activities of the current National Assembly, State President, the NA Standing Committee, the Ethnic Minority Council, NA Committees, the Government, the Prime Minister, the Judge of the Supreme People’s Court, and Head of the Supreme People’s Procuracy.

They will closely examine both strong and weak points of the NA, NA agencies and other relevant agencies with the aim of achieving better results and meeting people’s expectations.

In his opening speech, NA Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong highlighted the need for a stronger determination to achieve the goals set by the NA’s Resolution for 2011, with a focus on curbing inflation, stabilizing the macroeconomy, and ensuring social welfare.

The country has maintained positive economic growth and social order, but still faces great challenges such as complicated developments in the world economy, instability and disasters in some countries, and the risk of inflation and epidemics in Vietnam, Mr Trong said.

On behalf of the NA, Chairman Trong extended deep condolences to the Emperor, Diet, Government and People of Japan, who have suffered the serious consequences of the recent earthquake and tsunami. He expressed strong belief that the Land of the Rising Sun will surmount numerous difficulties, resume normal production, and develop vigorously.

After Mr Trong’s speech, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung delivered an additional report on the 2010 socio-economic situation and major solutions to manage the implementation of the 2011 socio-economic plans.
