In a speech delivered in the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) on July 26, the Republic of Korea President Lee Myung bak sent his condolences to the family of Thach Thi Hoang Ngoc, who was stabbed to death by her Korean husband who had a history of mental instability.

He called for a thorough crackdown on international marriage brokers, adding that the RoK still lack a proper system to protect ethnic minorities and public maturity in dealing with them. He emphasised that RoK’s agencies should prevent a similar incident from occurring as a lot of grief and sadness has been felt by both the parents and the public.

The President also stressed that Korea is becoming a multicultural society and that it needs to initiate related programs to enhance national competitiveness.

According to statistics from the Republic of Korea, there are now more than 180,000 foreigners, mostly female citizens from Vietnam, China and the Philippines, residing in the RoK after marrying local residents.
