Measures to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS to the wider community were discussed at a workshop in HCM City on August 7 by the National Assembly Committee for Social Affairs and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The Ministry of Health reported that as of June 30, Vietnam had 176,400 people living with HIV and more than 41,200 people developed full-blown AIDS. Nearly 47,500 people died from the disease.

The ministry report also revealed that 73.16 percent of those infected were men, and the number of HIV-infected pregnant women and children kept increasing year on year.

Currently, more than 4,100 children are living with HIV/AIDS, and more than 6.5 million are in high-risk groups.

Delegates looked at HIV/AIDS infections and proposed measures to prevent the spread of the disease in Vietnam. They underlined the need to prevent mother-to-child transmission of the deadly virus, take care of HIV-infected pregnant women and children, and mobilise resources for the fight.

Delegates also discussed the Ministry of Health’s draft decree to increase fees between 2.5-10 times for 350 hospital services.
