Hong Kong’s Sun Wah group has pledged to grant US$42,000 to provide scholarships for outstanding poor students with disabilities in Hanoi and upgrade schools in northern Hung Yen province.

An agreement to this effect was signed in Hanoi on September 24 between Sun Wah group and the Vietnam Children Support Fund (VCSF).

According to the VCSF, this is part of a programme launched in 1994 to provide scholarships for outstanding students who have special difficulties. So far, the programme has granted more than 21,000 scholarships for outstanding poor students and students with disabilities with a total value of over VND12 billion.

Sun Wah started operating in Vietnam in 1970, mainly in the fields of seafood, real estate and financial services. The group has agreed to donate US$1 million to help Vietnam improve teaching and learning conditions in poor areas.

The group also signed a memorandum of understanding with Vietnam’s Education and Training Ministry in May to set up the Sun Wah Foundation.
