Soldiers and local people in the Truong Sa island district of central coastal Khanh Hoa province will cast their ballots to elect deputies to the 12th National Assembly on May 13 – a week ahead of schedule. Preparations for the event have been completed and islanders have made every effort to ensure the success of the festive day.

On Truong Sa Lon (Big Truong Sa) island, large propaganda posters have been put up and lists of candidates and voters have been made public on all small islands.

Since mid-April, the Island’s Party Committee has paid special attention to information dissemination of the event. Every day, the address speaker system has presented twice the election law, and citizens’ rights and responsibilities.

Lieutenant Colonel Ta Trung Duc, Party Secretary of the Big Truong Sa Island said soldiers and local people stationed on the island have been made aware of their responsibilities as well as the honour of going to the poll in the country’s big festive day which takes every five years.

“The Island’s Command will do its best to ensure the election takes place in a lawful manner,” said Mr Duc.

Meanwhile, preparations for the election on Da Tay Island have also been completed. Commander in chief of the Island Pham Xuan Dai said the command has established polling stations and made public lists of candidates and voters. He said besides soldiers stationed on the island, those from the Lighthouse, the East Sea Fisheries Logistics Service Centre and fishermen nearby will also go to the poll.

Honour and responsibility

Sergeant Tran Van Thang who has been stationed on Big Truong Sa island since July 2005 told VOVNews that it is his honour to fulfil the duty on the island.

“I used to cast the ballot on the mainland, but my feeling this time is much different because I am a soldier stationed far away from the mainland to defend the nation’s territorial waters,” said Thang.

Second lieutenant Nguyen Van Phan from Truong Sa Dong (Eastern Truong Sa) Island said he is aware of the rights and responsibility towards the election.

“As Vietnam is speeding up the international integration process, it is imperative to select prospective and competent candidates to the country’s highest power agency to help push Vietnam forward,” said Phan, who is a young Party member.
