Vietnam will make greater efforts to foster the ties of special friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Laos, said Chairman of the Vietnam-Laos Friendship Association in Ho Chi Minh City, Phan Xuan Bien.

Speaking at a celebration of the 36th anniversary of Laos’ National Day in HCM City on November 30, Mr. Bien praised Lao people’s achievements during the process of building Laos into a peaceful, independent, democratic, and united nation towards socialism.

Cooperation between HCM City and Laos’ two localities, Vientiane and Champasak have proved effective, especially in agriculture, education, human resources training, banking, culture, tourism and sports.

Lao Consul General in HCM City, Southideth Phommalat, said both sides will work together in organizing a wide range of practical activities in 2012-the Year of Solidarity and Friendship between Vietnam and Laos” which is of great significance for boosting bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, transportation, health care, and culture.

Vietnam is currently one of the biggest investors in Laos with a total investment capital of US$3.3 billion from 258 projects.

In the first eight months of this year, Vietnamese businesses have poured US$469 million into Laos, higher than the investment level recorded last year.

Vietnam is Laos’ third biggest trade partner with last year’s two-way trade turnover reaching US$490 million. The figure is expected to hit US$800 million this year.
