Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung gave an order on December 28 to initiate construction of the Maspero riverbank dyke in the Mekong delta province of Soc Trang.
Crossing the provincial capital of Soc Trang from west to east with a total length of over 11,089km, the dyke plays an important role in preventing landslides and ensuring safety for residents and infrastructures along the riverbanks.

The Soc Trang construction project management board invests in and supervises the project which was designed by the Southern Irrigation Science Institute.

The first phase of the project will cost VND587 billion sourced from government bonds.

Addressing the groundbreaking ceremony, Deputy PM Hung underlined the dyke’s significance to the provincial culture and society. Therefore, he said, its construction requires high technical standards as well as close inspection by local officials and the management board.

The senior official also pledged that the government will provide full capital to speed up construction, which is set to last until 2012.
