The Election Commission of Thailand (EC) has announced that the new by-elections are scheduled for April 29, after the April 23 polls failed to fill the 500-seat House of Representatives.

EC Secretary-General Ekkachai Varunprapa told reporters that the re-balloting would be held on April 29 in 13 constituencies where candidates of the ruling Thai Rak Thai (TRT) Party stood unopposed, but failed to win the minimum 20 percent of total votes as legally required.

According to the Thai News Agency (TNA), the unofficial results of the April 23 by-elections in 40 constituencies across 17 provinces, mostly in the southern region, showed that four small parties beat the TRT Party to win in 9 constituencies, while candidates from the ruling party won in 17 constituencies.

The new by-elections are crucial for Thailand's national governance as the parliament cannot convene to name a new prime minister until all 500 seats in the House of Representatives are filled.
