Floodwater in the central region is rising high, especially from Quang Nam to Quang Ngai provinces. The National Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control (NCFSPC) has urged the central provinces to drastically step-up preventive measures.

The committee has asked these provinces to check low-lying residential areas along rivers and areas which are likely to suffer from landslides to evacuate local people to safer areas. In addition, they must control sea and river transportation and not let ships set out to sea. Based on flood levels in each province, they should cancel classes at schools.

*** Heavy rain on October 11 and 12 caused partial flooding in some localities in Quang Nam, threatening the lives and property of more than 150 families in Dai Cuong village, and killing one person in the province. Local authorities and people are mobilising resources to clear up landslides on highways 14E, 14D and Ho Chi Minh. The provincial committee for flood and storm prevention and control said that heavy rain and flood in recent days has caused damage estimated at around VND25 billion.

*** From October 14-18, the flood tide in southern region will reach its highest level this year. Water levels in Dong Thap Muoi and Long Xuyen will surpass warning level 3. According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, it will rain heavily in the north-central and north-eastern regions on the first two days of this week and floodwater from Hoang Long river and other north-central rivers will increase quickly. These provinces must prevent landslides and flash floods and partial floods.
