Homeless, hungry and cold on streets of Hanoi

VOV.VN - As most families around Hanoi sit down to their evening meals in warmth and comfort each evening – they are surrounded by loved ones, warmth and, most importantly, four walls.

The same cannot be said for hundreds of homeless in the capital city, like those pictured, who face the nightly prospect of fighting off the bitter cold with any materials available.

Personal problems such as divorce or unemployment can cause a breakdown in people's lives that leads to homelessness and sleeping on the streets like this man wrapped in a blanket.

These striking pictures, showing rough sleepers huddled next to storefronts, in alleys and city parks, depict the hardship hundreds of people will face over the cold winter days ahead.

This lady, 80 years old, huddles in a store corner to keep warm.

A group of friends visit the lady to offer what help they can.

Down and out: Hundreds of homeless people will sleep rough each night in Hanoi this winter including women and children.

They wrap themselves in thin blankets and plastic tarpaulins and fall asleep despite the rain and cold wintry weather in east Hanoi.

Often individuals, or groups of young people like those pictured offer to help the homeless with small packs of food and warm humanity.

No food: A homeless man tries to sleep under a blanket in a city park.

The materials of this blanket are so thin the man’s feet can be seen through it.

Everything he owns: Huddling up for warmth in several blankets, this homeless man rests his head on a bin bag containing his clothes.
