The Overseas Vietnamese Association in Vientiane, Laos, held a ceremony on May 28 to raise funds for Vietnamese victims of typhoon Chanchu.

More than US$3,000 was collected at the ceremony and will be sent to the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF).

On the occasion, staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in Laos and Vientiane-based offices of Vietnamese agencies also donated to the fund for support of the victims.

By May 25, 20 fishing ships caught in typhoon Chanchu have been escorted back to Da Nang port. However, the typhoon, which hit the East Sea two weeks ago, sank at least 13 Vietnamese fishing ships and killed at least 20 Vietnamese fishermen. Efforts to rescue and search for fishing ships and fishermen listed as missing are being stepped up.
