The newly-appointed US Deputy Chief of Mission in Vietnam, Virginia Palmer, has said she will work to help realise agreements signed by leaders of the two countries during Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s visit to the US in June.
Meeting with local media workers in Hanoi on October 14, Ms Palmer said that she will assist the Ambassador to fulfill the target of promoting bilateral friendly and cooperative relations with Vietnam, especially in the areas of economics, education and healthcare.

When asked about the impact of the US economic recession on Vietnamese exports, including the export of garments and agricultural products, Ms Palmer said that the US is considering orders sent by Vietnam since last Christmas.

The diplomat said she hopes that Vietnam’s exports to the US, as well as the US’s flow of investment into Vietnam will continue to increase significantly. She expects two-way trade to exceed US$12.5 billion this year.

Regarding the Vietnam-US Open Skies deal relating to all cargo services initialed in Hanoi on October 7, Ms Palmer expressed her belief that the accord will bring a range of benefits to the businesses and people of both countries.

The diplomat expects the two sides to negotiate the signing of a similar pact governing passenger transport in the near future.
