Uruguay hails cooperative ties with Vietnam

(VOV) - Acting President Danilo Astori on May 15 spoke highly of the growing Uruguay-Vietnam ties, noting the signing of agreements on trade and investment, and double tax avoidance will help boost bilateral trade.

While receiving Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Dinh Thao on May 15, Astori recalled Deputy Vietnamese Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh’s Uruguay visit in December 2013 when both countries signed those important trade deals.

During the visit, the Uruguay government announced its decision to recognise Vietnam’s market economy status.

The President said the Uruguay embassy, which opened in Hanoi in 2011, is playing an important role in strengthening bilateral relations.

For his part, Ambassador Thao said Vietnam wants to promote comprehensive cooperation with Uruguay, especially in trade and investment. However, economic cooperation has not matched its potential despite the fine political relations.

The Uruguay Customs statistics show two-way trade turnover hit a record high of more than US$81.5 million last year, a year-on-year increase of 20%. Vietnam’s exports and imports for the year were up 14.4% and 22.7%, respectively.

Thao also talked about progress in cultural cooperation between the two countries, citing guitar duo Umbral’s performance at the recent Hue Festival 2014 as a typical example.

Both host and guest stressed that Vietnam and Uruguay boost cooperation and mutual support at regional and international forums, especially the United Nations.
