The National Petroleum Corporation of Malaysia, Petronas, on January 21 presented gifts worth US$20,000 to more than 400 students at kindergartens and primary schools in Lung Sui commune, Si Ma Cai district, the mountainous province of Lao Cai.

Awang Jaya, Chief Representative of Petronas Office in Vietnam, handed over the gift package, which included rice, blankets, warm clothes, medicines, toys and teaching aids, to the children.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Awang Jaya stated that Petronas would provide more donations to residents in localities where the firm had investment projects.

Since 2000, the firm has provided 74 scholarships worth US$1.8 million for Vietnamese students to study at the Petronas University of Technology (UTP) in Malaysia and thousands of scholarships for students nationwide.

The firm has so far given over US$1 million to charitable projects in Vietnam. It arrived in Vietnam in 1991 and has taken part in the exploration, exploitation, processing and distribution of oil and gas products, as well as engaged in marine transport, automobile industry and real estate through its six foreign invested affiliates and joint ventures with the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam).
