Baby trafficking ring shut down in HCM City

(VOV) - HCM City police officials announced on March 13 that they have arrested seven traffickers involved in a large-scale trans-national newborn trafficking ring.

According to initial reports, they were caught in the act of attempting to trade a three-day infant in front of Pediatrics Hospital No 1 in district 10.

The traffickers include Tuong Dinh Thuong, Ngo Thi Lan, Tran Ngoc Quy, Vo Van Vien, Vo Thi Kieu Trang, Pham Tuan Phuong and Tran Thien Nhan.

Police said that the newborn was identified as belonging to Trang. Trang and Vien allegedly were in the process of selling the baby to Lan at the price of VND7 million.

Quy is reported to have admitted that he brokered this and other deals to sell three infants to Lan at the price of VND1 million each and Thuong is reported to have acknowledged that since June 2013, he has brokered deals for the sale of as many as 20 newborns.

Police said that Thuong and Lan often sold these infants to families who encountered difficulties in giving births in the south.

The case is now under further investigation.
