Mekong Delta provinces are implementing the first phase of a project to improve local healthcare services, with a total cost of US$85 million. US$70 million of this total will come from a World Bank loan and a US$5 million grant from the Japanese Government.

The project, expected to be completed by the end of 2011, aims to raise the quality of healthcare services in the Mekong Delta region. It also aims increase the capacity of monitoring and controlling epidemics and create favourable conditions for poor people to access high-quality medical services.

The Mekong Delta region has the lowest proportion of medical workers per capita in comparison with other regions in the country. Currently, about 17 million people in the Mekong Delta region do not have adequate access to healthcare services. As such, the rate of people contracting infections and diseases remains high.

Meanwhile, a meeting was held in Can Tho city on May 28 to discuss measures to boost the implementation of the project.
