Experts from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Vietnam-Canada Environmental Project (VCEP) discussed the management of industrial pollution in Hanoi on May 4.

Nguyen Khac Kinh, Head of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment's Department on Appraisal and Assessment of Environmental Impact, said the country's pursuit of renewal has given a boost to the industrial sector to grow rapidly, which in turn has generated a high level of pollution.

In order to tackle the problem, the VCEP was developed in 2000 with funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

Through 2006, the VCEP has been carried out on a trial basis in the cities of Hanoi, Da Nang and Hai Phong, and the provinces of Binh Duong, Long An, Bac Ninh and Hai Duong, helping increase the environmental management capacities of these localities.

To date, the VCEP has trained 16,500 experts working at provincial natural resources and environment and industrial departments and at facilities to monitor environmental pollution.
