As many as 43 people were killed and 28 others injured in a blast caused by illegally stored explosives in Ningwu district in China's northern Shanxi province on July 7, according to China's Xinhua News Agency.

Local officials have rushed to the scene to oversee rescue efforts. Shanxi provincial leaders demanded that an all out effort be made to rescue the injured, and responsible persons be punished accordingly to the law.

More than 200 fire fighters, armed police and public security police are clearing off the debris from the explosion, Xinhua reported, adding that preliminary investigation suggests that a fire was blamed for triggering the explosion.
