Students awarded Vallet scholarships

Vallet scholarships were awarded to 549 outstanding students from universities, colleges and high schools across northern Vietnam at a ceremony on August 23.

Founder Professor Odon Vallet, Vietnamese-French Professor Tran Thanh Van and Professor Le Kim Ngoc presented the scholarships worth VND5.4 billion (roughly US$260,000) to the students.

The event was attended by Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Quan, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Vinh Hien and Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Hong Lam.

Each high school student received a scholarship worth VND8 million (US$380), while college and university students, post-graduates and research students received VND14 million (about US$680) each.

Professors Vallet, Van and Ngoc will next travel to the central region and the South of Vietnam to continue the scholarship programme.

The Vallet Scholarship Fund has set aside VND22 billion (more than US$1 million) to award 2,250 outstanding Vietnamese students this year.

Since its establishment in 2001, the fund has awarded over VND120 billion (US$5.5 million) to more than 25,000 students. The fund was established by French Professor Odon Vallet from France's Sorbonne University through the Meeting Vietnam organisation founded by Vietnamese-French Professor Tran Thanh Van.
