Vietnam has been elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for a second successive term (2009-2011).

On March 25 and 26, Vietnam joined other members of the IPU Executive Committee in discussing topics which will be debated officially at the 122nd IPU Assembly.

The Executive Committee focused their discussions on issues such as the upgrading of the role the IPU plays in the context of global integration and the improvement of the IPU’s operations in international politics for the sake of peace, security and cooperation among nations.

It also discussed matters related to the IPU Women’s Committee, the Human Rights Committee, and the HIV/AIDS Committee.

Ngo Quang Xuan, who is Vice Head of the Vietnam National Assembly’s External Relations Committee and a member of the IPU Executive Committee, said Vietnam put forward its ideas on the IPU’s relations with the United Nations. Vietnam also took part in discussing the contents of the third high-level meeting of legislative leaders in Geneva, he added.

The 122nd IPU Assembly officially met on March 28 to discuss nuclear security, the situation in the Middle East, and aid from the international community, especially when helping the victims of the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile.
