Eighty Vietnamese teenagers, including 12 national tournament champions, are competing at the seventh ASEAN Junior Chess Championship, which opened in Jakarta, Indonesia on June 12.

As many as 72 sets of medals will be offered for individual and team standard, rapid and blitz games.

The annual event, which is organised by the ASEAN Chess Confederation (ACC), attracted 300 players aged 8-18 from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam.

In recent ACC competitions, Vietnamese players have proved to be strong contenders. For instance, they won 60 out of a total of 72 medals at the 2005 ASEAN Junior Chess Championship held in Thailand.
