The US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science (AMPAS) and the University of California, Los Angeles Film and Television Archive organised the New Voices from Vietnam event to screen Vietnamese films in California from November 5-14.

17 films, including 7 features, 6 documentaries and 4 short films produced after 2000, were also introduced.

Some famous Vietnamese directors and artists including Dang Nhat Minh, Dustin Nguyen and Do Hai Yen were also invited to visit the great studios in Hollywood and introduced to new filming technologies from the world’s greatest film industry.

Bi, Don’t Be Afraid by Phan Dang Di, The Moon at the Bottom of the Well by Nguyen Vinh Son, Adrift by Bui Thac Chuyen, Clash by Le Thanh Son, Owl and Sparrow by Stephane Gauger and Floating Lives by Nguyen Phan Quang Binh were all screened.

AMPAS also organised a gala to honour legendary director Minh for his classical movies including The Love Doesn’t Come Back (1984), Nostalgia for the Countryside (1996), The Guava House (2000) and most recently Don’t Burn (2009) which represents Vietnam for the best foreign language film Academy Awards.

The event is part of a cultural and educational exchange programme held by AMPAS.
