Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will resume their formal negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA) in Tokyo on April 10, breaking an eight-month stalemate, the Japanese Foreign Ministry announced on April 4.

Negotiators are scheduled to meet in three days.

Japan and ASEAN expect to conclude the FTA talks in the spring of 2007. The Japanese Government has faced growing pressure from domestic industries and politicians to accelerate the talks, as they claim the nation lags behind China and the Republic of Korea in deepening economic ties with ASEAN, according to Kyodo news agency.
