East Asian leaders agreed to adopt the Cebu Declaration on Energy Security in East Asia in which regional countries pledged to seek alternative energy sources, effectively use and preserve available energy sources aimed at ensuring stable supplies of energy for common developments in the region.

The second East Asia Summit took place in Cebu, the Philippines on January 15, drawing the participation of 10 ASEAN countries and six dialogue partners including China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand.

Top of the agenda was the issue of energy security in which East Asian leaders underscored the need to enhance cooperation, especially in saving energy, developing renewable energy sources to ensure long-term supplies of energy. In that spirit, the leaders agreed to adopt the Cebu Declaration on Energy Security in East Asia under which regional countries pledged to seek alternative energy sources, effectively use and preserve available energy sources aimed at ensuring stable supplies of energy for common developments in the region.

Delegates also discussed orientations for future development of the East Asia Summit. At this meeting, PM Dung said that the East Asia Summit is in its initial stage, requiring regional countries to seek appropriate solutions for developing and perfecting cooperation mechanisms towards the goal of building an ASEAN community.

Vietnam will actively cooperate with ASEAN members to make the East Asia Summit’s activities become positive factors in promoting peace, security and prosperity in East Asia.

East Asian leaders agreed to boost cooperation in such five priority areas as energy, finance, education, bird flu prevention and natural disaster control. They also heard and contributed opinions on the economic and financial situation in East Asia. They emphasised the importance of the East Asia Summit as a dialogue forum to tackle strategic issues in the region- an integral part of the regional structure including the ASEAN+3 Summit process in which ASEAN plays an important role.
