The Institute for Aquaculture Research under the Ministry of Fisheries has recently announced its success in culturing four rare fish species which live in the Red River.

The four species, with the scientific names of hemibagrus gutattus lacépède, bagarius yarrelli sykes, spinibarbus denticulatus oshima and semilabeo obscous lin, have been found to be on the verge of extinction.

Experts said that the amount of the collected rare species have sharply decreased to only 10-15 percent of their 1970s and 1980s outputs. Most disturbingly, the catch of the spinibarbus denticulatus oshima species is now roughly only 1 percent compared to its catch made two to three decades ago.
