The Danang city People’s Committee handed over the appointment decision to Chanh at a ceremony on May 5, and the decision took effect as of May 2014.

Chanh, 43, has graduated from a law school and is holding a master’s degree in literature. He now assumes the new role to replace his predecessor Dang Cong Ngu who was appointed the first leader of the island district in 2009.

During the past five years, Ngu had collected numerous historical documents and evidence asserting Vietnam’s sovereignty over the island.

He had met many people living and working on the island and written the Hoang Sa annals published in January 2012.

After the south was totally liberated in 1975, the Hoang Sa island district was established under former Quang Nam-Danang province.

Since Quang Nam-Danang was split into Quang Nam province and Danang city in 1996, Hoang Sa has belonged to Danang city.
