The Vietnam Rural Farm and Enterprise Federation has been set up to facilitate the development of the country's agricultural and rural sector following its accession to the World Trade Organisation.

Vietnam now has 100,000 farms, with 51 percent located in the Mekong delta, 21 percent in the southeast, 10 percent in the Central Highlands, and 10.6 percent in the Red river delta, according to President of the Vietnam Farmers' Association Vu Ngoc Ky.

It has 13,000 enterprises operating in rural areas with total chartered capital worth tens of billions of US dollars, using almost 25 percent of the labour force and making up 25-27 percent of the national GDP.
