Vietnamese children’s choir has secured a silver medal at the 5th World Choir Games (WCG) in Graz City, Austria, from July 9-19, according to Pham Hong Hai, deputy director of the Vietnam Opera and Ballet Theatre on July 18. An awards ceremony will be held at the Stadthhalle palace, Graz City on July 19.

The choir, including 13 children aged between 6 to 15, presented Vietnamese folk songs in their categories competing against 47 others from more than 30 countries and territories.

Under the baton of artist Nguyen Phi Hung, the Vietnamese ensemble performed a number of folk songs such as Di cay, Nguoi o dung ve, Hoa thom buom luon and Trong com.

Apart from the contest, the choir also received thunderous applause from the audience when they performed in a friendship concert at Hauptplatz square.

The WCG, organised by the World Choir Association, takes place every two years under the slogan “singing together brings nations together”.

This year’s event is the largest so far with the participation of around 500 ensembles from 93 countries. More than 20,000 singers competed in 28 different categories.

China and Indonesia topped Asian countries, sending 60 and 40 choirs to the competition respectively. This is the first time Vietnam has attended in such an event.
