Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on July 11 inaugurated the second phase of the Cai Cui seaport project in Can Tho city, emphasizing its important role in the socio-economic development of the Mekong Delta.

Mr Dung said at the groundbreaking ceremony that once fully operational, the port will slash transportation costs in the Mekong delta and mitigate the overload of Saigon port.

The second phase of the project covers wharves with a total length of 500m, modern handling facilities and a logistic area worth VND600 billion.

When its construction finishes, the port will be able to receive container and heavy cargo ships and will have a warehouse system with a total area of over 25,000m2.
