During the six days of the 2008 lunar New Year (Tet) festival, 57 fires broke out, causing an estimated damage of VND2.58 billion. However, this was 14 less than the previous Tet, according to statistics from the fire prevention and rescue police department under the Ministry of Public Security.

No serious fires were reported in big markets, supermarkets, trade centres or public places. Most of the fires were caused by negligence after burning incense and votive papers.

The reduction in the number of fires during Tet was attributed to efforts by the fire prevention and rescue police department to deal with emergency cases in time.

There are many large festivals in the first lunar month and people always use more oil and petrol, and burn a lot of incense and votive papers. Hence, the leaders of agencies in all localities have asked local people to pay due attention to fire prevention while getting fire prevention teams ready to combat fires.
