9th Party Congress of the Vietnam People’s Army opens

About 450 delegates representing 250,000 Party members from the Vietnam People’s Army attended the 9th Party Congress in Hanoi on September 20.

Present at the Congress were Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, former Party General Secretary Do Muoi, former State President Le Duc Anh, former State President Tran Duc Luong, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, former National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An, and many leaders and senior officials from central agencies, ministries and the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee.

Participants at the event reviewed the implementation of the resolution of the previous congress and made orientations and plans for the next term from 2010 to 2015. They also gave opinions for draft documents for the Party Central Committee and selected delegates to attend the upcoming 11th National Party Congress.

Addressing the Congress, General Phung Quang Thanh, Party Politburo member and Minister of National Defence, emphasised the political significance of the 9th Party Congress. He said it would help the People’s Army improve management capacity, improve combativeness and promote the renewal process in order to build a modern and powerful revolutionary army force.

On behalf of the Party and State, General Secretary Nong Duc Manh praised the remarkable achievements made by the Vietnam People’s Army in recent years.

He asked the Army to follow and implement the Party’s orientations, political goals and revolutionary tasks. In the coming years, the army’s Party committee should thoroughly grasp and properly implement the Resolution of the 11th National Party Congress, he said.

The Party leader also urged the army’s Party committee to step up the combined strength of the nation and the whole political system, as well as promote the great national unity in order to build up national security and defences.
