The Vietnam Red Cross (VRC) carried out 29 humanitarian programmes with a total capital of VND98 billion over the past six months, said VRC Vice President and Secretary General, Doan Van Thai, at the organisation’s conference on July 1.

Mr Thai praised some of outstanding donors such as the World Wheelchair Organisation and the International Committee of the Red Cross for presenting 480 wheelchairs for disabled people and Agent Orange victims.

Other Red Cross societies and non-governmental organisations from Switzerland, France and the Republic of Korea also provided medicines and free medical treatment while financing projects to supply safe water for the poor and plant mangrove forests.

The VRC has prepared nearly 30 other projects to be introduced at a meeting of donors slated for August 28 in Hanoi.

Recently, the VRC has donated nearly US$400,000 to China and Myanmar to help earthquake victims in Sichuan province and Nargis typhoon victims in Myanmar.

In the first six months of 2008, the VRC has raised VND149 billion for poor families to overcome difficulties and for poor children to get better education.
