Vietnamese teenagers Hoang Quy Phuoc and Nguyen Thi Anh Vien are set to begin an extensive training programme in the US from next year, announced the Vietnam Aquatic Sports Association (VASA) on December 1.

Phuoc, who won gold medals in the men’s 100m freestyle and the 100m butterfly at the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia earlier this month, hopes to shine at the 2012 London Olympics.

Vien, 15, also won a silver medal in the women’s 400m medley and a bronze medal in the 200m backstroke at the Games.

The training session in the US is expected to gear Phuoc and Vien up for the Olympic Games next year, said VASA’s chief officer Nguyen Thu Hang.

As planned, five or six swimmers will be sent to the US for training in February 2012, Hang said, adding that earlier this year two Vietnamese teenagers attended a training programme in Kunming, China.
