Tropical stormChanthu on July 23 weakened into a low pressure system and travelled along the Vietnam-China border, according to weather experts.

After making landfall in China’s Guangdong province, Chanthu was downgraded to a low pressure system with winds gusting between 50-61kph near its centre.

At 04.00am on July 23, Chanthu was positioned at 22.6 degrees north latitude and 108.3 degrees east longitude, about 130km north of Quang Ninh’s Mong Cai town.

In the next 12 hours, the depression system is expected to move between north and north-west at a speed of 15kph and directly affect the northern part of the Bac Bo (Tonkin) Gulf and northern border provinces.

Weather experts from the National Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Centre warned that Chanthu would bring heavy rain to north-eastern provinces and cause flash floods and landslides in mountainous and low-lying areas in the next two-three days.

Since being formed in the East Sea on July 18, Chanthu has regained its strength and changed its direction several times. This is the second storm hitting the East Sea and north-west of the Pacific this year.

Earlier, storm Conson left one dead and 17 fishermen missing when bartering Vietnam on July 17.
