President Sang meets new foreign diplomats

(VOV) - On October 19, President Truong Tan Sang received new ambassadors and representatives from international organizations from Belgium, Finland, Switzerland, Iceland, Iran and the EU.

Meeting with new Belgian Ambassador to Vietnam Jehan Rockart, President Sang said Vietnam treasures its ties with Belgium, hoping that that two-way trade would surpass the current value of US$2 billion once the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) takes effect.

Roccas said as respective member of the ASEAN and EU, Vietnam and Belgium share the common goal of enhancing regional connectivity, maintaining regional security stability and mutual development.

She said she would augment bilateral cooperation in fields of strength- environment technology, applied informatics, agriculture, food processing and logistics during her term of office.

Belgium will continue assisting Vietnam in governance, climate change, green development while strengthening cross-cultural exchange, education and tourism, she told Sang.

Talking to Finland’s Ambassador Inka Pecka Antero Simila, the State leader said he hoped Finland would help Vietnam promote green economic growth, environmental sustainable development and natural resources management.

The Finnish diplomat promised to liaison with Vietnamese ministries and relevant agencies to increase coordination in information technology and green environment. 

At a meeting with Swiss Ambassador Beatrice Maser Mallor, Sang urged Switzerland to support Vietnam’s bid to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 2020-2021 term and its implementation of sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Maser Mallor  in turn said Vietnam remains a priority in Switzerland’s development policy, stating that Switzerland will spur cooperation with Vietnam in education, scientific research, hospitality and tourism. 

Receiving with EU Ambassador Bruno Angelet, the leader expressed thanks to the EU - one of the largest ODA supplier of Vietnam, stressing that the country never forgets assistance provided by international community, including the EU, in its path to achieving the UN millennial development goals (MDGs).

Angelet said both side will further cooperation in economics, security and policy sectors, towards improving productivity, competitiveness and green development. 

Irish Ambassador, for his part, said the year 2016 will mark the 20th anniversary of Vietnam-Ireland diplomatic ties. Ireland will continue helping Vietnam meet SDGs and become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure, he said.

Speaking to Iranian Ambassador Saleh Abidi, the host believed that the new diplomat would coordinate with Vietnamese agencies to further affiliation in oil and gas, farming, tourism, trade and investment. 

Ambassador Saleh Abidi said in addition to existing cooperative areas, both nations need to expand cooperation in security, anti-terrorism, fundamental sciences and science-technology. 

Iran stays ready to provide scholarships for Vietnamese students earning bachelor, master and doctorate degrees, as well as teaching the Iranian language in the country.
