The 39th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO 2008) will take place in Hanoi for the first time from July 20-28.

The news was announced at a press briefing held in the capital city on July 11 by the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) and the Vietnam Physics Association.

By July 8, as many as 390 candidates and 279 officers from 85 countries and territories around the world had registered to take part in this year’s competition, making it the largest event in terms of participating nations.

Dr. Phan Hong Khoi, Chairman of the Vietnam Physics Association, said this year host Vietnam will be responsible for both theoretical and practical questions. Participating students will also have a chance to join peers in exchange programmes with a number of Nobel Prize winning physicists.

IPhO 2008 aims to find out new talents in physics and promote exchange programmes with other countries.

To make good preparations for the competition, the MoET has coordinated with relevant ministries and agencies to help candidates complete all customs procedures.
