Two films entitled “Ao Lua Ha Dong” (The White Silk Dress) and “Hanoi, Hanoi” shared the Vietnam Cinematography Association’s award for the best film of 2006, as the association handed out its annual honours in Hanoi in the evening of May 5.

"Ao Lua Ha Dong" has been internationally acclaimed, winning the audience award at the Pusan International Film in the Republic of Korea last year.

It tells the story of misfortunate Dan and her hump-backed husband, and their attempt to preserve a precious silk dress, which was a wedding gift from her husband. The film has been hailed for its accurate depiction of Vietnamese life and its respect for the beauty of ao dai, the traditional dress.

Produced by Phuoc Sang Studio at a cost of US$1 million, the film also earned awards for director Luu Huynh, actor Quoc Khanh, and cinematographers Trinh Hoan and Nguyen Tranh, as well as a sound effects prize for Dest O’ Nel.

The best actress award went to Chinese actress Gan Ting Ting in "Hanoi, Hanoi".

The film features a journey by a Vietnamese-Chinese woman on a quest to discover the Vietnamese side to her heritage. Thirty years earlier, her Chinese mother had run a herbal medicine shop in Hanoi and had fallen in love with one of her Vietnamese employees.

The journey takes audiences to Hanoi and through the northern provinces of Lao Cai, Yen Bai, and Quang Ninh, whose beautiful landscapes and vibrant colour help bring Vietnamese culture, life and people into perspective.

Prizes for best music and best art design were also awarded to "Hanoi, Hanoi", which also brought the best supporting actor honour to Hoang Hai.

"Hanoi, Hanoi" was co-produced by the Yunnan Ethnic Minority Film Studio in China, and the Vietnam Writers’ Association Film Studio.

In the television category, director Vu Hong Son’s "Chay An" (Buying Justice), produced by Vietnam Television, won the Golden Kite for best television series. The 22-episode series features real-life scandals involving corruption, models and beauty contestants.

The best director title in this category went to Do Thanh Hai for "Nha Co Ba Chi Em " (A Family with Three Sisters), which was also named best short-form television film.

In the documentary category, "Khoang Cach" (The Distance), directed by Tran Phi from the Central Documentary Science Film Studio, secured awards for the best documentary film and best director.

The Vietnam Cinematography Association awards have been annually presented since 1993.
