Superior Bonze Thich Quang Tam, head of the Long Thanh Pagoda in Thu Thua town, southern Long An province, has been awarded the “Information Technology Knight” title by the E-Chip magazine for his contributions to computer illiteracy in the town.

The Superior Bonze learnt basic IT skills by himself with an old computer given by his friend. He then shared his knowledge with poor students living in the pagoda and adjacent areas.

In 2002, the Superior Bonze asked Buddhist followers to donate their used computers and opened free IT classes for local people. Such a class in Long Thanh Pagoda has helped train almost 2,000 students who are officials, students and people in Thu Thua town.

Superior Bonze Thich Quang Tam’s center is now equipped with 24 modern computers in addition to his old one. He said that this year the pagoda will seek sponsorships to help expand the computer rooms and improve the center’s training capability.
